Conference: The Rhine of the Humanists (15th-16th centuries)
Selestat
Description

The Rhine of the Humanists (15th-16th centuries): the circulation of scholars and ideas in the Upper Rhine region during the Renaissance.
Since time immemorial, the Rhine has been a river that carries goods, people and ideas on its waters. This lecture explores the intellectual and cultural ferment that swept through the Upper Rhine region during the Renaissance, through the spread of printing, the development of scholarship and navigation to ‘Narragonia’, as depicted by Sebastian Brant in his Nef des fous, a bestseller printed in Basel for the 1494 carnival celebrations.
