Schirmeck
Description
The town of Schirmeck is a "Town of Memory" and has recently been made a "Town of Remembrance" with the foundation of the Alsace-Moselle Memorial and Memory trail. Schirmeck owes its name, and undoubtedly its foundation, to its château ("Schirmen ecke" or "the corner that protects") which was first mentioned in 1328 as Neufville en Barembach. Throughout its history, the château fulfilled its role protecting the local population.
