Description

Built by Albrecht Kage (1262), a minister of the Bishop of Strasbourg, the Kagenfels is a medieval fortification located about 15 km from Obernai in the Mont Sainte-Odile mountain range.
The castle passed through the hands of several noble families, and in 1563, the town of Obernai purchased it.
It was besieged four times—in 1383, 1390, 1397, and 1424—and was subsequently abandoned in the early 17th century.
Since 2002, a volunteer restoration project has revealed a castle that is remarkable for its opulence, its size, and above all, its multiple phases of construction spanning the 13th to the 16th centuries.
