Guided Tour - Saints Peter and Paul Church - History and Restoration in 2019–2021

In the Middle Ages, the site of the present-day church was located outside the city walls and was under the jurisdiction of the Abbey of Mont Sainte-Odile. The 12th-century Romanesque building that stood there was replaced three centuries later by a Gothic-style church. Because it had become too small, this church was completely demolished in 1867 to make way for the current Church of Saints Peter and Paul, which was consecrated in 1872.
Measuring 75 meters in length, its size brought about profound changes in the town’s urban layout. The south facade underwent major restoration work in 2019–2021.
The interior of the church is distinguished by remarkable Neo-Gothic decor and a symphonic organ by Joseph Merklin (1882).
The left transept houses a Holy Sepulcher (1504), late 15th-century stained-glass windows (reworked in 1895–96), and the reliquary containing the heart of Bishop Freppel (1921).
